Background of the Study
Palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life for patients and their families facing the challenges associated with life-limiting illnesses. It addresses not only physical symptoms but also emotional, spiritual, and social aspects of care (WHO, 2024). In low-resource settings such as Nigeria, palliative care services are often underdeveloped, leading to inadequate care for patients with terminal illnesses. The role of family caregivers is critical in providing continuous care, but their satisfaction with palliative care services can directly influence the quality of care delivered to terminally ill patients (Ogunleye & Bello, 2024).
At Federal Medical Centre, Gombe, there is limited research regarding family caregivers’ satisfaction with nursing palliative care services. Satisfaction among family caregivers is influenced by various factors, including communication with healthcare providers, emotional support, and the perceived quality of care delivered (Ibrahim & Adekunle, 2023). Understanding family caregivers' satisfaction with palliative care services is essential to improve care delivery, address caregivers' concerns, and foster a more supportive environment for both patients and their families.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing recognition of the importance of palliative care in Nigeria, family caregivers often face challenges in accessing quality palliative care services. Caregivers may feel unprepared, emotionally drained, or dissatisfied with the services provided due to factors such as poor communication, lack of training, and inadequate emotional support (Adebayo & Musa, 2023). At Federal Medical Centre, Gombe, there is a lack of comprehensive data on family caregivers' satisfaction with nursing palliative care services. This gap in knowledge hinders efforts to improve the quality of care for terminally ill patients.
This study aims to assess family caregivers' satisfaction with the palliative care services provided by nurses to determine how the quality of care can be improved, ultimately enhancing the well-being of both patients and caregivers.
